Name that Lava, Herdubreid Scientific Challenge and Volcano Riddle

Having the brain rebuilt from top down every Friday never get’s old. I do not know how you guys are doing since I am bad at both riddles and recognizing lavas and volcanoes.

But it is fascinating to witness how the blood hounds of the Volcano Café unerringly zeroes in on the pray. This week I want the name of the lava, the volcano and the name of the local fast food. So, 3 points to be had all in all. I will of course ding when someone has scored.

Tomorrow, or the day after I will post you an explanatory article.

Herðubreið

Photograph by Eggert Nordahl under permission.

Photograph by Eggert Nordahl under permission.

Herðubreið is a tabletop volcano (tuya) in Iceland that has been active during the last few years with repeated earthquake swarms and magmatic emplecements. Supposedly the volcano is a defunct part of the Askja volcano. Evidently it is not as defunct as previously believed, and there is quite a lot pointing to it not being a part of Askja.

So, last night I proposed that we should do something with the volcano since it is rather poorly investigated. Ontop of the two questions above we can also have a bit of fun with the youngish looking strato volcano on top of the tabletop mountain. Here is the question, have it erupted after the last glacial period?

I thought we could do this as a case of crowd science. We have access to some equipment, we have access to a lot of people with various expertise, so we could actually collectively make a fairly nice piece of scientific work on Herðubreið.

So, in another word, I propose that Volcano Café officially adopt Herðubreið as our project. Now and then we should post status reports on our progress, if anyone feel up to it, being the collector and editor of what has been said please do not hesitate to come forward! Herðubreið and Volcano Café needs your services.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Name Those Volcanoes Riddle

The riddle contained the mixed up clues to 2 volcanoes … 1 point awarded for each …

At the intersection of Rts 36 and 119 Peter was totally over come by the glowing clouds; then Bill, Andie and Chris arrived to cover the celebrations!

1 point Sa’ke for Mount Pelee … “Peter was totally over come by the glowing clouds”

Glowing clouds was the English translation of a French term nuée ardente first used to describe the pyroclastic flows of Mount Pelee that engulfed the town of St Pierre in 1902 killing 30,000 people.

1 point KarenZ for Candlemass Island … “At the intersection of Rts 36 and 119; then Bill, Andie and Chris arrived to cover the celebrations!”

The clue pointed to the movie Groundhog day (1993) set in Punxsutawney, starring Bill (Murray), Andie (MacDowell) and Chris (Elliott). Groundhog Day is the US term for Candlemass Day.

And once again the Sheepy Dalek Bar is open

I posted a similar image on the day i took it in September. It shows a Lava Rose on the way up to Teide in Tenerife. The Basaltic columns formed the shape of a flower when they cooled. I have no idea from which eruption this resulted or how old it is. It does not remind me of a rose but most definitely of a flower.

Some new webcams were pointed out:

Islandbloggen, A long list of Icelandic Webcams. ( In Icelandic)

Now THAT list will keep auroa lovers busy, some new volcanocams are there too!

Popocatépetl, Mexico

Thanks for finding them! They were added to the crows nest.

It does make sense to pay those 2 new El Popo cams a visit, some plume was clearly visible the last days.

The livecam from Garibaldi Hill showing Soufrière Hills volcano on Montserrat. is not new but i managed to grab a beautiful screenshot at noon.

And the sad thing to keep an eye on, are the aftershocks after the Mag 8 ( or 7,9) earthquake in Santa Cruz, Solomon Islands. There was one Mag 7 ( or 6,9 ) just recently. http://geofon.gfz-potsdam.de/eqinfo/list.php

Sheepy Dalek, Name that Lava XXIII

I normally like to sum up the weeks happenings before we go into the weekend with a Name that Lava competition and a riddle. But i could not find much to report on volcanoes. We saw 2 bad earthquakes and aftershocks. One in Costa Rica and one in southwestern China. The death toll is unfortunately still rising. See Earthquake Report for more details.
Here is this weeks lava pic!

An extra point if this is solved within an hour! Good luck.

This weeks NtL image was sent in by someone who will stay anonymous for now and she/he also asks the questions and will, most likely go around shouting Ding Ding within an appropriate time.

Easy one this week, four points available
1) Q: What am I?
2) Q: Where am I?
3) Q: When was I born?
4) Q: What is the local savoury ‘fruit’?

Our evil riddle master Alan sent a new edition too. (Don’t ask me, i don’t know the answer.)

I sound as if my home area is from Eastern Europe-ish! Wrong! You may find a ruffed mouse tho’!
Where is my type locality?
What are my main constituents?
What rarity has been landed on my shores?

And i want to share 2 images. Both of something as unspectacular as sand. One was collected by a friend close to Gullfoss recently and the other sample originated in Riad, Saudi Arabia. Both images share a magnification of only 100 fold.

Have fun guessing and spend a nice weekend

Update:

As many of you have noticed I disappeared for a while. In the end even I have to work for my living, so I ended up with some 160 hour weeks.

During my leave of absence many people stepped up and helped out with marvelous posts that I am reading up on now. But I still would like to say a personal and heartfelt thank you to Spica. Nobody could have done a better job of it!

Answers to Alan´s riddle #15 and NtL #1 and #2

Riddle #15 on Sheepy Dalek and NtL XXII, an evil riddle and answers to Name that Lava I and XV: Pico del Teide

Yes, German, sub-marine hydrothermally altered lava may exist, but it’s not me; I suppose I’m just a bit of an ole’ ’rusty’ prototype rock!
What is my name?
What do I look like!

Winners: KarenZ, Sissel;
Answers: Jaspilite Protore – ie banded early Gondwana iron ores as Hammersley etc; Yes=Ja (german) + Submarine hyrdo altered lava= Spilite Hence Jaspilite
prototype deposit-Protore. It is the Gondwana banded Ironstone, mix of Fe oxides and quartz species as jasper.
Protore is a raw mineral deposit which may be enriched to produce ore.

Talla says: March 16, 2012 at 21:54 : it’s a potassium feldspar matasomite known as Charoite with Canasite found only on the Murun Massif, Sakha Republic, Russia (volcanic event – Siberian Traps).

Answers:

Norilsk deposit, a part of the Siberian traps.
Charoite:
Quote Wikipedia: “Charoite (K(Ca;Na)2Si4O10(OH;F)·H2O), pronounced CHAR-oh-ite, is a rare mineral, first described in 1978 and named for the Chara River. It has been reported only from the Sakha Republic, Yakutia, Siberia, Russia.[3] It is found where a syenite, the Murunskii Massif, has intruded into and altered limestone deposits producing a potassium feldspar metasomatite. Charoite is translucent lavender to purple in color with a pearly lustre. However, it is a discrete mineral rather than a rock. Charoite is strictly massive in nature, and fractures are conchoidal. It has an unusual swirling, fibrous appearance, sometimes chatoyant, and that, along with its intense color, can lead many to believe at first that it is synthetic or enhanced artificially.”

Quote: “The Murun massif is located on the Aldan Shield. In the atlas you can find it between the Charaa and Tokko river, south of Olekminsk. The Murun massif is of course famous for charoite. The Murun massif is (type) locality for a number of unusual minerals. This is caused by the very complex geology of the Murun massif.  Vastly simplyfied the Murun massif is a differatiated alkaline intrusion. “

Here is a brainteaser by our Evil Riddle-master, who is on vacation.
Give me a short-back-and-sides and you will make me cry!
Who will cry?
What is the Evil One on about?
I am posting those 2 riddles. I have no clue about the image, but i have the answer to Alan´s riddle in a second email. Carl can join in, as can all the other dragons because they don´t know the answer. I will run around singing Ding Ding in around 24 hours time. For the answers to  NtL, my dragon master will have to do the favors.
Good luck!
