Hello everyone!
Any good bar has a good competition. Most of you know that Erik Klemetti runs a nice competition in naming a volcano. So, I will not do that for the obvious reason. Instead I got some very nice pictures of lavas that has been sent to me from different people.
So here is the first friday instalment of “Name that Lava!” The rules are simple:
1. There is one point to the one who first identifies the type of lava.
2. Another point to the one who identifies the volcano that emited the lava in question.
3. I will hand out a bonus-point for best attempt if nobody comes up with the correct answers before the next instalment of the competition.
This should be sufficiently fun and hard to make your minds spin while you imbibe the normal Bar drinks.

I read articles stating that there is an extreme bloom of algae before Antartica at the moment.

They say there is normally little iron in the water and that they think the wind blew the Iron rich dust in. Cloud it be that this dust is actually ash from Pue Hue Cordon Calle? After all the ash was blown till Australia and volcanic ash is rich with iron.
When did that add come under the post?

And the displacement for FRON to ALAJ, IZAN, TN03 & HI01 is showing a small increase. While the displacement for FRON to HIO2, 3 and 4 are showing a small decrease.

Volcanic process continues by maintaining surveillance system and the periodic bathimetrys
The Scientific Committee of the Plan of Civil protection by volcanic risk has confirmed, with the unanimous approval of all members, that the underwater eruption that began in October in El Hierro has concluded. Remains, however, the volcanic process begun on 17 July that anomalies are still registering at both deformation and seismicity parameters.
The continuity of this process also requires to maintain a scientific monitoring system until it becomes the parameters prior to July of last year. Most of the scheduled bathimetrys shall also be maintained.
These were the conclusions of the meeting of the Scientific Committee, which has taken place tomorrow at the headquarters of the Academy Canaria of security of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in which participated the director-general of security and emergencies, Juan Manuel Santana; the subdelegado of the Government in the Canary Islands, Guillermo Díaz Guerra; and by videoconference, the general director of protection Civil of the Ministry of the Interior, Juan Antonio Díaz Cruz, and the Minister of security of the Cabildo of El hierro, Maria of the Carmen Morales, as well as the mayors of El Pinar and border.
Juan Manuel Santana explained that “this situation implies a valuation of Civil protection measures which are in force once all data are analysed in depth”.
For its part, and from the Ministry of the Interior confirmed the maintenance of the bathimetrys scheduled for the next three months, but with a lower frequency is “given that the phase in which we are not of risks for the population”, he clarified the subdelegado of the Government.
In this sense, morning will the boat of rescue maritime Adhara held a bathymetry, to later succeed four more, the last of them in the middle of the month of May.

Having slept on it. Aren’t they just saying that the initial de-gassing and cone-building has finished (the eruption which started in October) but the parasitic cone (start date ??), which has appeared with very little EQ and HT activity, is still continuing?
They are maintaining monitoring but with fewer bathymetry trips. In other words, watch this space.

Just caught up after being busy yesterday organising our trip to La Palma (only two and a bit weeks to go!!!) There is still the option of a side trip to El Hierro if there’s something to see…
So I saw I’d scored a point int competition (and did a little victory dance) now I’m not so sure…unless it was a pillow lava from Teide which ended up on top of Gran Canaria? Which I suppose is not impossible… Anyway great competition and very educational 🙂
And regarding El Hierro at 88ms depth and with potentially a new magma injection, I wouldn’t put it past BoB to disrupt our flights (hopefully on the way back!!)

Reading Judith’s post it seems that Bob has been declared dead but the volcanic activity on the island might continue. So we have to wait and see.
To keep us occupied Katla has just had a bit of a twitch. Nearly all the Iceland stations show a jump – is this from the same thing or bad weather or something else?

I wondered if I understood it well, the lava bomb has flown 25 kilometers through the air befored it crashed down on Gran Canaria?? So if Teide erupts it is probably safer to stay on Tenerife…

This eruption created the Las Cañadas caldera, a large caldera, at about 2,000 m above sea level. The caldera is ~16 km (9.9 mi) across east-west and ~9 km (5.6 mi) north-south. At Guajara, on the south side of the structure, the internal walls rise as almost sheer cliffs from 2,100 m (6,900 ft) to 2,715 m (8,907 ft). The 3,718 m (12,198 ft) summit of Teide itself, and its sister stratovolcano, Pico Viejo (3,134 m (10,282 ft)), are both situated in the northern half of the caldera, and are derived from eruptions subsequent to this prehistoric explosion.”
Future eruptions may include pyroclastic flows and surges similar to those that occurred at Mount Pelée, Merapi, Mount Vesuvius, Etna, Soufrière Hills, Mount Unzen, etc. During 2003, there was an increase in seismic activity at the volcano. Such activity may be indicative of magma rising into the edifice, but is not always a precursor to an eruption.
Teide is considered to be unstable and has a distinctive bulge on its northern flank. This bulge is not believed to be associated with an influx of magma, but the result of a slow northwards collapse of the edifice. Seismic evidence suggests that Teide may be constructed over the headwall scarp of the infilled Icod Valley, a massive landslide valley formed by edifice failure in a similar manner to that of the Güímar and Orotava Valleys. The summit of the volcano has a number of small active fumaroles emitting sulfur dioxide and other gases including low levels of hydrogen sulfide.”

Love it, Sissel. I’ll stay on Tenerife as I’m quite safe LOL. Having said that, Teide is a deco volcano and last erupted in 1909, so she is due for an erruption but maybe not in my life-time. 🙂
According to ER IGN keep secret the vertical deformation graphs.
Pevolca has also decided to continue monitoring the island of El Hierro until the situation is reached as prior to July 17 2011 (earthquakes and deformation). Vertical deformation parameters are kept secret by IGN. Horizontal deformations can be followed in the IGN website.
Well some one is still monitoring: the Margalef is out in a very choppy sea at the moment.

I think Óscar is not working yet in his discipline but it doesn´t mind…

We are talking about the movements at Iceland the last week.
This is what Óscar telling me:
“The night we had a few earthquakes low-medium magnitude in different parts of Iceland. The first thing to tell you that all of them were located in areas where the dorsal meso-Atlantic … that is where you separate the American and European plate. There were 3 that in Reykjanes peninsula predujeron, about 20 km from Reykjavik (remember that the opening of the dorsar is just 20 km from reykajvik) and as a curiosity to tell which stood next to a ski resort. Just about 10 km, in the opening direction (direction NE) is a leading geothermal station for a while getting water on earth, and that is producing earthquakes because the crack is opening and put water on earth is swells are very low magnitude earthquakes, and last less than a second, but a people called Hvragerði I can (well known for its river of hot water, where you can swim safely) have quedajo a little, because good 2×3’s annoying that every move you up the house.
Then another series of earthquakes was on the north, were at sea, and on that area, more of the same, is where is located the ridge, and has also been at sea, so no one felt it.
Just let you know about terromotos southern Iceland, there are a few home with some damage, but from what I have understood are very old houses (here all buildings must be built following a seismic-resistant standards)

“Look now at the same time in CAN station and you’ll see the same background noise probably caused or weather conditions and sea state ……”
Erm…the spectrogram has been building since 28/02/2012 on all stations.
& the sea must be fairly warm as there is a lot of vapour hanging around, despite the wind and sea currents.

PEVOLCA director declares the end of the emergency phase (red light) in the area of the eruption

Maintain pre-emergency phase (light yellow) to the island and the sea area of La Restinga
The Minister of Economy, Finance and Government Safety Canary, director of Civil Protection Plan and Emergency Care for Volcanic Risk, said the end of the emergency phase (red light) in the maritime area of the eruption of La Restinga and the declaration of the pre-emergence (light yellow) to the same area. It also keeps the yellow light to the entire land area of El Hierro.
Regarding measures to the security of the population, the direction of PEVOLCA deleted the terrestrial zone between White Sands and Los Tacorón Waiters, and maintaining the maritime exclusion zone in the vicinity of the eruption although reduced in distance. This will be materialized by the Harbour Master in a resolution so that until the document is issued 4 miles will be maintained original condition.
As for aquatic activities in the area of La Restinga-Tacorón, remains the recommendation not to avoid bathing and diving, fishing and shellfishing. By the direction of the Plan continues to taking water samples for analysis whose results will allow the Department of Health update recommendations.
